Family restaurants are, as the name suggests, restaurants for families, but of course you can go there alone or with friends. Japanese people often shorten it to fami-res.
Many family restaurants serve a variety of food, including Japanese food, Chinese food, steak, pasta, pizza, curry and so on. They also have a drink bar system, where you can drink as much coffee, tea, and cafe latte as you like for a fixed price. Some menu items are also available for takeaway.
Each table has an electronic order board, so you can order your favorite food at the table. In many cases, you can change the language to English and order from the English menu screen.
In most cases, family restaurants are chain restaurants, so the staff are well-trained and you can order with confidence. There is no tipping system in Japan, so you don't need to tip the staff.
